blueprint blue, 2007 , acrylic, ink, collage on canvas, 50 x 50 in. Biography Gourlay works through an intuitive process of layering color and forms to infuse the act of painting with feeling, imagination and experience. Her interest in elements found in nature, architecture, and music is apparent in her work as she deals with order and chaos using line, shape and color. She seeks unexpected playful juxtapositions while at the same time keeping a complex open visual field. Her use of line work can see influences from Agnes Martin and her color play from Paul Klee. Elizabeth Gourlay completed her undergraduate work at Edinburgh Collage of Art and her Master Studies in Painting at Yale University School of Art. She resides in rural Connecticut and returns to Scotland often. |
